Picking outfits for your engagement session doesn’t have to feel overwhelming! I always encourage my couples to wear something that feels like them, with elevated style that photographs beautifully. As a Richmond engagement photographer, I’ve worked with hundreds of couples through the changing seasons and love to see how they incorporate their personal style with classic silhouettes. I allow time for 2 outfits during my sessions, so I love when couples mix a dressy and casual outfit. Picking outfits that match your location is always a huge plus, for example if brewery hopping is a huge part of your relationship let’s plan for a casual outfit and some action photos cheering a pint! Vs. If you’re opting for a romantic garden setting or elevated cocktail bar those outfits may look a bit different!

The Classic White Dress
You can never go wrong with a timeless white dress. Think a simple sundress with lace details, a midi dress with puff sleeves, or even a sleek slip dress. White reflects natural light beautifully and instantly gives your photos a soft, romantic, and bridal-inspired feel. Pair it with nude sandals or minimal heels to keep the look polished.

Flowy and Romantic
Soft fabrics that move with the breeze are always flattering in photos. A maxi dress with ruffles, a chiffon wrap dress, or a ribbed shirt paired with a fitted top pair well for any season. Stick with muted colors like blush, sage, or dusty blue for a romantic vibe, and finish the look with delicate jewelry or strappy sandals.

Classy and Formal
If you want to go bold and chic, a little black dress is always in style. Think cocktail-length dresses, a sleek jumpsuit, or a satin midi dress with a statement heel. Darker tones like black, emerald, or navy stand out beautifully against the softer backgrounds of Richmond’s streets or gardens, giving your photos a sophisticated, editorial edge.

Flirty Date Night
This is your chance to show off personality and have fun! A short wrap dress, a playful skirt , or even a bold patterned romper are great options. Bright colors like pink or fun florals add energy to your photos. Add wedges or block heels for a little extra flair without sacrificing comfort.

Casual and Comfy
For a laid-back but still photo-ready look, try dark wash jeans with a crisp button-up shirt or a chic blouse. For guys, chinos with a fitted tee and sneakers keep things relaxed but polished. Aim for comfort and style for a brewery date photoshoot “just hanging out ” vibe.

What to Avoid
While your style should always shine through, there are a few things that don’t translate as well on camera. Try to avoid:
-
Busy patterns or loud logos – these can make your images look less professional and distract from your connection. They also appear dated more quickly, we want these photos to live on your walls for decades!
-
Neon or overly bright colors – they can cast unflattering tones on skin and pull focus from your expressions or the background beauty.
-
Overly baggy or stiff clothing – fitted but comfortable pieces always photograph better and let you move naturally.
-
Uncoordinated outfits – you don’t have to match, but choosing complementary colors helps your photos look cohesive.
