City engagement sessions always require a creative set of poses and patience. I love the ability to document my couples with a sentimental backdrop, exploring the neighborhoods where their relationship first began. Monument Avenue, is a historic gem of row homes and foliage in downtown Richmond, Virginia. It’s a massively popular location choice, for good reason, featuring colorful classic style that transports you with European vibes.

Piper and Nick joined me downtown this spring to capture the last few weeks of blooms. They weren’t even phased by the bustling city onlookers. Although we only traveled the distance of about 2 blocks we were able to capture so many unique backdrops! Getting your photos taken for the first time is intimidating enough, but add in the extra distractions of oncoming traffic, unsightly trash cans, tight sidewalk spaces, and everyone from dogs and humans watching. This engagement session turned out to be one of my favorites!

Whenever I photograph downtown sessions,  my head is ALWAYS on a swivel. I’m constantly looking for the next best spot, or hidden green space, church courtyard, and creative angle to show a view of the city you might miss just driving through. This makes for some of my favorite creative posing!
